Both the Federal Government and your state government (all the way down to your child’s school) offer a variety of services for children with brachial plexus injuries, brain injuries or cerebral palsy. Some are voluntary, but some are because Federal or state laws require that the services be provided.
This section starts off with some of the most significant services for your child: Requirements that your child receive a free appropriate public education. This mandate comes from either the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (also called “Section 504”). In addition, states also offer what is often called an early intervention program, or “infants & toddlers assistance” for children from birth to age three. Currently we have information on Missouri and Kansas.
We also have some information for you on dealing with Social Security, and/or with Medicaid or Medicare. Plus some suggestions on handling issues that will arise with your own health insurance company.
